Since forming on Victoria Australia’s Mornington Peninsula over five years ago, Carpathian have been an indestructible force on unstable ground. Hampered by incessant line-up changes, they’ve nonetheless managed to assert their dominance in the Australian hardcore pack. Releasing their debut EP through Washed Up label in 2005, they were signed to Australian label Resist, who issued the acclaimed full-length album “Nothing to Lose” the following year. Further forging their reputation on the live front, Carpathian played second-fiddle to no one, whether mixing it with the cream of the local scene or stepping up onto bigger stages for tours with Killswitch Engage, Bleeding Through, etc. After battling line-up changes, a freshly unified Carpathian line-up toured through the UK and Europe alongside Parkway Drive and On Broken Wings. Later they became the only local band to play every date on the Australian legs of the 2007 Taste of Chaos Tour. Then in December, came the first recording by the rejuvenated line-up, a limited two-song 7″EP via Resist titled “Wrecked”, unveiling a frightfully intense new Carpathian sound.
Soon after they converged upon the Getaway Group, a studio situated in the basement of Jay Maas’ suburban home in Wakefield, Massachusetts. A respected hardcore producer who has pulled huge sounds from the likes of Shipwreck a.d. and Verse, Maas proved the perfect choice to help Carpathian realize their grand vision for “Isolation”.
Within each of the ten songs that comprise “Isolation”, Carpathian’s overall growth is apparent. Cohesive song-writing, fantastic recorded performances, and a powerful collective vision shine throughout. Lyrically “Isolation” walks the desolate personal path of Carpathian vocalist/lyricist Martin Kirby. Taking on personal and social/environmental subject matter, he strives to not only express but also educate willing ears to live as positively in this negative world. Instilling the fact that Carpathian are one of the few bands out there today that remain as inspiring as they are highly entertaining.

Blasting out of Byron Bay, almost as an affront to the serenity of their surrounds, PARKWAY DRIVE quickly established themselves as the most formidable force Australian heavy music had ever seen. A five- piece of astonishing power and understated charisma, PARKWAY DRIVE created unseen hysteria with their brutal 2005 full-length debut, “Killing With A Smile”. The album spent time in the ARIA National Top 40, affirming the astounding popularity of a band who had grown their fanbase from genuine hardcore roots.
In 2007, PARKWAY DRIVE unleashed their standout sophomore effort, “Horizons”. Recorded once again by producer and Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz at Zing Studios in MA, USA, Horizons debuted at 6 on the ARIA chart, 1 on the Australian Artist chart and 1 on the Independent chart. Horizons takes the PARKWAY DRIVE sound to totally new extremes. A bone-crunching avalanche of classic hardcore, Swedish death and math-metal, it went on to be one of the biggest circle-pit-inducing albums of ’07.
In 2009 the band released PARKWAY DRIVE: “The DVD” a 70 minute documentary looking at the rise and rise of the Byron juggernaut. Featuring archival footage dating right back to their very first shows, the film follows the quintet from humble beginnings on the beaches of the NSW North Coast to storming stages all over the world. Within a week of release, “The DVD” was certified Gold and is predicted to achieve Platinum status in the near future.
Currently writing the follow-up to 2007’s “Horizons”, 2010 is shaping up to be the bands biggest yet. With a new album to surface in mid 2010, the band will be touring through Europe and the UK this April / May and return to the US in June through to August as part of the Vans Warped Tour.
The quiet confidence and lack of arrogance expressed by the band is what lies at the heart of PARKWAY DRIVE’s massive appeal. They have this ability to destroy an audience, to decimate a venue with complete and utter malice, yet at the same time show everyone in the place the time of their lives. This is the kind of relaxed, no- nonsense attitude you get growing up in Byron. PARKWAY are just five ordinary dudes who came together to create one extraordinary band.

Sitting down the rung as the fifth largest city in the country and more than 700kms from the often-praised music mecca of Melbourne, the isolated surrounds of Adelaide, South Australia have proven fertile ground for hungry, pissed off musicians.
This town spawned the likes of hardcore giants Day Of Contempt and I Killed The Prom Queen: the two very bands that Cry Murder shared a stage with for their first ever show back in 2003. Maintaining the high standard of technical proficiency set by their hugely successful contemporaries, this five-piece combined a volatile stage presence and unbreakable work ethic to set about making their mark on the rest the country. Within just two years Cry Murder secured a home on Sydney’s long respected hardcore label Resist, releasing their debut EP, From The Shadow Of Doubt, in 2005.
With influences stretching from blistering modern hardcore to the precise industrial metal of Fear Factory and melodic shredding of Sweden’s Arch Enemy, they held their own, stepping up to share bigger stages with major internationals such as Bleeding Through, As I Lay Dying, Hatebreed and Converge. On national tours with Parkway Drive, I Killed The Prom Queen and Himsa, the fan base continued to swell. Under the radar of radio and media, Cry Murder traded on a reputation as a live force and steadfast belief that they would not compromise their increasingly aggressive sound. At the peak of their ability with a well-established national profile, 2009 leads us to the release of the debut full-length release, Above Us The Waves.
Once again in the trusted hands of Resist Records, their heaviest output to date is due to crash into stores and on to stages in late February/March. Tracking was completed in late 2008 at Capitalsound and Slaughterhouse Studios in their hometown with Zack Ohren (The Red Shore, All Shall Perish) handling mixing duties in his Castle Ultimate Studios, Oakland California. Finally, the mastering of this career defining work was entrusted to Swedish mastermind Goran Finnberg (Soilwork, In Flames).
On the strength of Above Us The Waves, the band retains their hard-won position as one of the country’s strongest heavy acts. They now move towards becoming one of its major exports as these crushing sounds meets the ears of new audiences worldwide.
The tireless and tour-hungry hardcore loyalists in LA’s TERROR, spearheaded by the endless enthusiasm of frontman Scott Vogel, have earned quite a reputation since forming at the turn of the millennium. Their melding of no-frills breakneck hardcore and the fervor of new generation metal bridges the gap between young and old, and it makes for one hell of a pit no matter what city or stage the band leaves in ruin. Vogel has been a key figure in the scene’s survival, having given up a normal home life to slug it out on the road despite broken limbs, slipped discs and everything else that comes with hosting a TERROR show.
Century Media Records has been a long-time admirer of Vogel and the band, and the label is thrilled to now officially welcome them to its increasingly diverse worldwide roster and announce the summer release of TERROR’s third full-length, The Damned, The Shamed on June 10th. This vicious slab of brutality was produced by the renowned Zeuss (Hatebreed, Shadows Fall) and is sure to please the band’s diehard fanbase, while garnering a new legion of young maniacal supporters. Be sure to stay tuned to to the Terror Myspace Page for a new track, which should be posted in the coming weeks and for their complete tour itinerary.
Vogel further comments on the newly signed deal: “”After a good run with Trustkill and several cool releases TERROR felt it was time for a fresh push and to attack from a whole new angle. We are very pleased to put out our next record with Century Media. We are lucky enough to travel and tour every corner of the earth and CM has a great worldwide presence. Plus, with a back catalog of Merauder, Shadows Fall and Behemoth, we are in great company.”
As synonymous as the band has become with stellar live shows, records like Lowest of the Low, One with the Underdogs and Always the Hard Way have earned TERROR a reputation for consistency. No matter what the circumstances, Vogel has surrounded himself with talent rich in passion. A DIY attitude has often been a common bond between band members, and the current line-up is no exception. New guitarist Martin Stewart made invaluable contributions to the purist, no B.S. approach heard on Donnybrook’s Lions In This Game, Nick Jett (drums) have been with the band from the start gave Always the Hard Way an effective lumbering beat.
If anything, TERROR’s goal is to bring back the good natured release of circle pits and stage dives as well as the finger-pointing anthems that were once integral to the hardcore scene. In its infancy, the band represented everything overzealous bouncers hated, and Vogel encouraging the crowd to “elevate the maximum stagedive potential” didn’t always sit well with the LA venues they packed with sweaty kids fed-up with aimless music. Nonetheless, thanks to word of mouth and the strength of songs like “Keep Your Distance” and “What Have We Done,” the band soon found itself touring partners with everyone from As I Lay Dying to Hatebreed, amongst a slew of others. It is this drive and desire that has cemented TERROR into the hearts of music fans worldwide and made them royalty within the touring front. The fact that they’re direct support to the reunited Earth Crisis right now speaks volumes. Time off for TERROR is considered time away from their hardcore family across the globe, something that they cannot live without, so rest assured, the years to come hold many more releases and live appearances worldwide.
Rest assured that, The Damned, The Shamed is the definitive hardcore album of 2008. Consider this your only warning.

With a thirst to play crushing hardcore fuelled by anger and sincerity, Her Nightmare was born in 2003. In the beginning, the five young Melbourne lads were obsessed by the sheer heaviness and honesty of Hatebreed ’s classic ‘Satisfaction Is The Death Of Desire’. Around the same time they were further inspired by Australian hardcore bands like Day Of Contempt, FMD and Mindsnare who were taking Aussie hardcore to the next level. Excited and ready to make their mark, Her Nightmare was spawned and unleashed its destructive tunes onto an unsuspecting Australian scene.
Over the next few years they played some memorable local shows with the likes of Parkway Drive, I Killed The Prom Queen and Day Of Contempt forging friendships and earning respect. Slowly but surely Her Nightmare were winning over crowds with their raw heavy hardcore and inciting many a violent pit. The band’s devastating sound and increasingly vigorous work ethic caught the eye of respected Sydney label, Resist Records. The resulting partnership proved to be a lethal combination as Her Nightmare rolled up their sleeves and made a conscious decision to up the ante in a big way.
In 2005 they released their debut album on Resist entitled ‘No Heaven No Hell’. Produced by DW Norton (Mindsnare, Toe To Toe) this album well and truly put the band on the map. Critically acclaimed, ‘No Heaven…’ was one of the heaviest and vicious hardcore albums Australia had ever seen. Now with their fans and contemporaries taking them more seriously than ever before, the band transcended into a new era of recognition. A national tour with good friends Parkway Drive along with a new found momentum ensured that 2005 solidified Her Nightmare as being a major force in the Aussie scene with world-class appeal. Throughout 2006 Her Nightmare shows grew and crowds now destroyed the pit with a renewed fervour highlighted by massive shows with Hatebreed, Terror, Comeback Kid, Most Precious Blood and many local heavyweights.
Like the rise and fall of the tides, trends have come and gone; but in 2008 Her Nightmare return with a new album that will serve as a reminder that there are some things that aren’t so easily swept away. The album was recorded at Planet Z studios in Hadley, Massachusetts with the legendary Zeuss (Shadows Fall, Hatebreed, Terror, Madball) – testament to the fact that Her Nightmare are taking it to the next level. Recording for this monster took place in November 07 for what is guaranteed to be a milestone release by any standards, and the new tracks are set to display a refined sonic hatred. Vocalist Baina enthuses, “over the years from the last record we’ve all become much better players and songwriters along with doing a fair amount of growing up. The new songs definitely reflect that. We are also staying true to heavy hardcore while everyone seems to be searching for what they define as hardcore in whatever new trend seems to be happening. I like to think we’re pretty oblivious to all that.”
