Now a staple in Australian hardcore, 50 Lions first bared their claws in 2005 at the height of the metalcore craze in their native Byron Bay. Focussing on producing a more traditional hardcore sound, the key to the survival of the band would be some serious van hours.

Building on a sturdy reputation as a fierce live presence, they earned their place on bills with Byron counterparts Parkway Drive and other notable Australian bands such as Carpathian, Miles Away and Her Nightmare, before stepping up to share stages with internationals such as Terror, Madball, Down To Nothing and Blacklisted. Following on from 7” and EP releases, their debut album, Time Is The Enemy was released through Resist Records in 2007 and praised for it’s energy and hooky riffs that showed the best use of a time-honoured hardcore framework.

Propelled by a tireless work ethic, multiple Australian, New Zealand and European tours ensued, establishing 50 Lions as global force in the genre.

The resolve to never compromise the integrity of their recordings or live performance has resulted in several member changes over the years, with new recruits always close friends of the band with solid knowledge of their work, meaning their trademark sound has remained intact.

After touring as a four piece for some months, the most recent addition to the band is former Her Nightmare frontman Luke Bainbridge on guitar. The partnership with the towering axeman came only two shows before their recent European tour and is one that the band believes has without a doubt led to their most powerful incarnation. Now handling the majority of the writing duties, Bainbridge brings valuable writing, playing and life experience to the outfit which has seen them concentrating harder on each individuals performance as well as the choice of lyrics and phrasing.

As many of their peers head into more melodic territory on upcoming records, this five-piece have insisted on taking an authentic heavy approach, spurred on by the likes of New York greats Cro Mags and Madball. “Instead of sounding like a band that was influenced by bands who were influenced by them, we’ve really taken it back to the source of the inspiration,” frontman Oscar McCall insists.

Inline with this attitude, recording of the bands sophomore album titled “Where Life Expires” took place once again with Sam Johnson at Melbourne’s 3 Phase Studios. Armed with a new album, they’re now itching to return to stages across the globe in the coming months, starting this November with a national tour of Australia where they will be joined by US band Trapped Under Ice.

Bad Blood

Members
Paul – Vocals, Dave – Bass, Nathan – Drums, Jake – Guitar

Notorious for their infectious hardcore urgency, integrity and powerful rage, the essence of Bad Blood will move you. Not to be mistaken for another contrived band of revolving members, constantly changing sounds, empty threats or an attempt to “make it”, Bad Blood simply do it their way.

Having contributed to the Sydney hardcore scene for many years between them, these four friends have further defined the Bad Blood sound and attitude from their past and ever evolving experiences outside of any scenes and cliques. Whether it be the uncertainty of what lies ahead in life or the never ending supply of grey areas society can relate to, Bad Blood question and confront it with raging hardcore.

After releasing their “Harsh Reality” CDep in February 2006 on Resist Records, Bad Blood have established a tight relationship with Resist and will be releasing their debut 10 song “Inner Peace Outer Grief” CD/LP in August 2007. Supporting many international and local acts since their demo, they continue to push their levels of intensity and attitude regardless of the audiences and venues. Bad Blood extend the soul, energy and rage from their influences from the late 80s NYHC scene including The Icemen, Underdog, Dynamo and Raw Deal among others…

Bad Blood played their last show at Resist’s HC 2009 in July 2009

Carpathian

Members
Martin – Vocals, Edward – Bass, David – Drums, Josh – Guitar, Lloyd – Guitar

Since forming on Victoria Australia’s Mornington Peninsula over five years ago, Carpathian have been an indestructible force on unstable ground. Hampered by incessant line-up changes, they’ve nonetheless managed to assert their dominance in the Australian hardcore pack. Releasing their debut EP through Washed Up label in 2005, they were signed to Australian label Resist, who issued the acclaimed full-length album “Nothing to Lose” the following year. Further forging their reputation on the live front, Carpathian played second-fiddle to no one, whether mixing it with the cream of the local scene or stepping up onto bigger stages for tours with Killswitch Engage, Bleeding Through, etc. After battling line-up changes, a freshly unified Carpathian line-up toured through the UK and Europe alongside Parkway Drive and On Broken Wings. Later they became the only local band to play every date on the Australian legs of the 2007 Taste of Chaos Tour. Then in December, came the first recording by the rejuvenated line-up, a limited two-song 7″EP via Resist titled “Wrecked”, unveiling a frightfully intense new Carpathian sound.

Soon after they converged upon the Getaway Group, a studio situated in the basement of Jay Maas’ suburban home in Wakefield, Massachusetts. A respected hardcore producer who has pulled huge sounds from the likes of Shipwreck a.d. and Verse, Maas proved the perfect choice to help Carpathian realize their grand vision for “Isolation”.

Within each of the ten songs that comprise “Isolation”, Carpathian’s overall growth is apparent. Cohesive song-writing, fantastic recorded performances, and a powerful collective vision shine throughout. Lyrically “Isolation” walks the desolate personal path of Carpathian vocalist/lyricist Martin Kirby. Taking on personal and social/environmental subject matter, he strives to not only express but also educate willing ears to live as positively in this negative world. Instilling the fact that Carpathian are one of the few bands out there today that remain as inspiring as they are highly entertaining.

Cry Murder

Sitting down the rung as the fifth largest city in the country and more than 700kms from the often-praised music mecca of Melbourne, the isolated surrounds of Adelaide, South Australia have proven fertile ground for hungry, pissed off musicians.

This town spawned the likes of hardcore giants Day Of Contempt and I Killed The Prom Queen: the two very bands that Cry Murder shared a stage with for their first ever show back in 2003. Maintaining the high standard of technical proficiency set by their hugely successful contemporaries, this five-piece combined a volatile stage presence and unbreakable work ethic to set about making their mark on the rest the country. Within just two years Cry Murder secured a home on Sydney’s long respected hardcore label Resist, releasing their debut EP, From The Shadow Of Doubt, in 2005.

With influences stretching from blistering modern hardcore to the precise industrial metal of Fear Factory and melodic shredding of Sweden’s Arch Enemy, they held their own, stepping up to share bigger stages with major internationals such as Bleeding Through, As I Lay Dying, Hatebreed and Converge. On national tours with Parkway Drive, I Killed The Prom Queen and Himsa, the fan base continued to swell. Under the radar of radio and media, Cry Murder traded on a reputation as a live force and steadfast belief that they would not compromise their increasingly aggressive sound. At the peak of their ability with a well-established national profile, 2009 leads us to the release of the debut full-length release, Above Us The Waves.

Once again in the trusted hands of Resist Records, their heaviest output to date is due to crash into stores and on to stages in late February/March. Tracking was completed in late 2008 at Capitalsound and Slaughterhouse Studios in their hometown with Zack Ohren (The Red Shore, All Shall Perish) handling mixing duties in his Castle Ultimate Studios, Oakland California. Finally, the mastering of this career defining work was entrusted to Swedish mastermind Goran Finnberg (Soilwork, In Flames).

On the strength of Above Us The Waves, the band retains their hard-won position as one of the country’s strongest heavy acts. They now move towards becoming one of its major exports as these crushing sounds meets the ears of new audiences worldwide.
